“Isn’t a CD analog?” is a more common question than you would think. Sound storage splits first into analog and digital, and digital splits again into lossless and lossy. Get those three buckets straight and LP, CD, MP3, AAC and FLAC all fall into place.
Analog carves the waveform physically, without breaking it up: the undulations of an LP groove, the magnetic signal on cassette tape — the wave itself lives on the medium. Digital instead samples that wave tens of thousands of times a second and stores numbers, ones and zeros. A continuous curve becomes a finely cut staircase. CD, WAV, MP3 and FLAC are all digital.
Only vinyl and cassette tape are analog. A CD stores sound sliced at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits — unambiguously digital. It looks like an LP because it is a round disc, but its surface carries ones and zeros as pits and lands. So: LP → analog, CD → digital.
The player is the easy tell. A turntable with a stylus means LP, so analog; a cassette deck means tape, so analog. A CD player, phone or computer means digital. By ear, analog carries a characteristic warmth and a faint background hiss, while digital has a clean background but a quantised, stair-stepped signal.

On top of that it restores the 16–24 kHz high frequencies that MP3 and AAC discard and that even CD struggles to carry — an attempt to bring analog’s rich top end back through digital.
