Lossless on a JBL Charge 6 — use USB-C, not Bluetooth

The Charge 6 is a Bluetooth speaker, so listening wirelessly means the sound is compressed again. But the speaker hides a “USB-C wired lossless” mode. Here is how to bypass Bluetooth and play the original up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

🔵A Bluetooth speaker that goes lossless — USB-C is the key

Connected over Bluetooth, the Charge 6 re-encodes audio with a codec such as SBC or AAC, shaving off high frequencies and detail. Connect it to a phone or laptop with a USB-C cable, though, and the speaker behaves like a USB DAC — receiving the digital signal without wireless re-compression. Manufacturer material and reviews put the ceiling at 24-bit/96 kHz lossless.

  • FirmwareUpdate the Charge 6 to the latest firmware in the JBL Portable app — lossless USB audio arrives as an OTA update.
  • CableUSB A-to-C or C-to-C, ideally under 1.2 m — long cables make detection and transfer less reliable.

Enabling USB audio (lossless)

The trick is to plug the USB-C cable in while holding the Play button.

  • Step 1Update to the latest firmware in the JBL Portable app.
  • Step 2Press and hold the play (⏯) button on the Charge 6.
  • Step 3While holding it, connect the USB-C cable to the speaker (other end to phone or laptop).
  • Step 4A confirmation chime means it has switched to USB audio playback mode.
  • Step 5Play a lossless file from the phone or PC — the original now arrives without Bluetooth re-compression.

📱On a Samsung Galaxy — set USB default to data transfer

Galaxy phones default USB-C to charging, so the speaker often is not recognised as an audio device. If a USB notification appears you can switch it there, but many models show nothing — then you change the default in developer options.

  • 1. Enable developer optionsSettings → About phone → Software information → tap “Build number” seven times → confirm the “Developer mode has been enabled” message. (Enter your lock-screen PIN if asked.)
  • 2. Change default USB configurationOpen the new “Developer options” at the bottom of Settings → scroll to “Default USB configuration” → choose “File transfer”.
  • 3. ReconnectUnplug the USB-C cable and connect it to the speaker again — from now on it attaches in data-transfer mode automatically.
  • 4. ConfirmA chime from the speaker, or playback coming from the speaker rather than the phone, means it is recognised — ready for lossless.
  • NoteIf your model does show a “USB charging this device” notification, tapping it and choosing “File transfer” is enough; developer options are unnecessary. Leaving developer options on causes no problems in everyday use.

🍎On iPhone — one permission prompt and you are done

iPhone has no charging-versus-transfer choice like Samsung; you only need the right model and the first-connection prompt.

  • iPhone 15 or later (USB-C)Connect the USB-C cable directly — it is recognised as a USB audio device automatically.
  • iPhone 14 or earlier (Lightning)You need a Lightning-to-USB adapter (Apple Camera Adapter) between the phone and the USB-C cable.
  • First-connection promptWhen “Allow accessory to connect / Trust this device?” appears, tap Allow — decline and it will only charge, with no audio.
  • ConfirmPlay music; if the sound comes from the speaker rather than the iPhone, it is recognised.

The re-compression on the Bluetooth leg disappears, and the high frequencies the codec was cutting come back with it. The lossless WAV and 16–24 kHz content in BrainHz audio then reach the speaker intact — and the more a track depends on “good sound”, the more obvious the difference.

(1) Turn on USB-C wired lossless mode as above rather than using Bluetooth. (2) Play BrainHz from your phone or PC. (3) The source has to be lossless to matter, so use BrainHz WAV rather than a lossy stream. Get all three right and the chain is complete: lossless source → wireless bypassed → lossless output.

⚠️Things to watch

Unplug the cable or reconnect over Bluetooth and you are back to lossy transmission. Also, “USB lossless” means the transmission is lossless — if the source is MP3, the original is already lossy and nothing is regained. Supported specifications (maximum sample rate) can vary by model, firmware and region, so check JBL’s official specs and support documents for exact figures.
