🍎 Sound science — what compression throws away
The man who put a thousand songs in your pocket reportedly listened to vinyl at home. That contradiction is the starting point of this article: MP3 was built to move sound cheaply, not to deliver it faithfully. Here is what a science documentary measured when it compared the two.

A Daegu MBC documentary, “The Sound of Life: Analog”, ran a set of blunt experiments. High-school students listened to MP3 music for just ten minutes. Straight afterwards their reaction time had slowed by about 0.087 seconds, shoulder muscles tensed, and growth-hormone-related readings dropped. Nothing about the content had changed — only the container the sound arrived in.
MP3 uses a psychoacoustic model: it decides which parts of the sound you are unlikely to notice and deletes them for good. Typical 128 kbps MP3 is about a tenth the size of the original WAV — the missing nine tenths include the high frequencies that carry consonants such as s, f and th, plus the fine reverb and air that make a recording feel three-dimensional.
The emotion in music lives in detail — harmonics, decay, the air of the room — and those are exactly what compression discards. Speed-listening training depends on the same detail, because precise consonants are the cue the brain locks onto.
