It is easy to write “I don’t hear so well any more” off as age. Recent research treats hearing as a gateway to brain health instead. Everything below is cited to primary studies, and none of it guarantees prevention or treatment of any specific disease.
The Lancet Commission on dementia prevention (2020, 2024) estimates that about 40% of dementia is preventable, and that hearing loss accounts for the largest single share of the modifiable risk (7–8%). In the ACHIEVE hearing-aid trial (Lancet 2023), cognitive decline in a high-risk group was 48% lower. That is why hearing care matters.
The French ENT specialist Alfred Tomatis described the ear not merely as an organ of hearing but as a “charger” supplying roughly 30% of the brain’s energy — with higher frequencies delivering more of the arousal and focus component.
