💸 Korean English by the numbers

Spending ₩27 trillion a year — so why can’t we hear it?

In Statistics Korea’s 2025 survey of private education for grades 1–12, the total came to ₩27.5 trillion — that figure even though it fell for the first time in five years. Per participating student, the monthly average topped ₩600,000. Split by subject, English is always near the top. Spend this much and still freeze in front of a foreigner as an adult, and the question is not “how much more” but “what were we buying?”

📊Three numbers

Statistics Korea’s 2025 private-education survey.

  • Total₩27.5 trillion — this size even though it is the first drop since 2020.
  • Monthly average per participating studentover ₩600,000. Even as the total falls, the load on the families who actually pay has not.
  • Durationusually 10+ years, elementary school through university. Count adults who go back to academies and it runs longer.

🧾What was bought

What the money mostly bought was the ability to read and solve — vocabulary lists, grammar books, workbooks, and the hours to explain them. Test scores answered that investment honestly, so it was not wasted spending. The trouble is that the list held almost no sound. Listening time was usually allotted only as much as the test demanded.

🏋️ Ten years in the gym, and still can’t swim

It is not that no exercise was done. A different exercise was done, hard. A decade of Korean English mostly looks like this — diligent, in the wrong event.

🔁So instead of spending more, change the order

Pouring in more money and time is already closed to most adults ([[three-thousand-hours]]). The handle left is order — set the sound first and put the letters behind it ([[listening-first-order]]). And how to set that sound is in [[hangul-sokcheong-what]] and [[thirty-day-roadmap]].

📌One thing to make clear

The figures above are the all-subject total. The amount for English alone is not written here — our rule is not to state a per-subject figure until it is confirmed against primary data. Once confirmed, we will turn this paragraph into a number.
